AFTER BIRTH: Midwives in Transition
Merriam-Webster defines a "calling" as a "strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence." Midwives often speak of their professional journey this way.
What happens to the midwife when the journey changes? When the body, mind, or spirit has come to the place where the midwife's care of a birthing woman and her newborn is no longer sustainable? What takes the place of supporting, empowering, and bearing witness to birth?
My new project will examine issues of midwives transitioning from active clinical care to their next life journey. If you are a midwife somewhere in this process, please contact me. Let's talk about it.
